What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a comprehensive psychotherapy that helps you process and recover from past experiences that are affecting your mental health and wellbeing.

It involves using side to side eye movements, or bilateral tapping (tapping one side then the other) combined with talk therapy in a specific and structured format.

EMDR helps you process the negative images, emotions, beliefs and body sensations associated with traumatic or difficult memories that seem to be stuck or that aren’t healing on their own. These can contribute to a range of mental health problems.

EMDR helps you to see things from a different perspective and relieves the symptoms that you are suffering.

What can EMDR help with?

EMDR was developed – and is best known – as a therapy for treating trauma or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It’s recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a treatment for PTSD.

EMDR is also commonly used to help with a range of mental health difficulties such as anxiety, depression, addiction, phobias, sleeping difficulties, grief, emotional overwhelm and many others. This is because many of our challenges stem from traumatic experiences for example, being bullied or criticised growing up, living in an unsettled or unpredictable environment, having unsafe relationships with care givers, having to ‘grow up’ quickly or simply not having our needs adequately met.

Resource Tapping

Resource tapping is a simple and easily learned offshoot strategy of EMDR for accessing your own innate healing resources. We all have inherent reservoirs of positive stored experiences – qualities and experiences such as peace, calm, safety, love, wisdom, strength and joy. However, when we experienced difficulties in our life or we are stressed and overwhelmed we forget or can’t easily access these innate resources. Resource tapping allows us to strengthen these innate skills, making them more accessible when we need them. This is a tool that can be helpful for stress, anxiety, depression, or just improving your overall sense of well-being.

I have recorded a number of resource tapping exercises for you to access for FREE in my resource tab.
